Challenge Accepted
Ride To Ponta De Pedras
On my last day in Alter do Chao, I was challenged to ride to Ponta de Pedras… Challenge Accepted.
You’re all probably aware by now, but for any newcomers… Hi, my name is Baz and I allow other people to decide where I live in the world and what I have to do there. I do this as a social experiment to test the theory that “anything is possible.”
Not only do people decide my life on a grand scale, but anyone can throw down extra challenges as well, and I try to tick off as many of these as I can. THEN, I document the challenges, review them, then let you know what worked and, more often, what went wrong and how to learn from my mistakes.
Sometimes it’s fun. Sometimes it sucks. Sometimes it’s painful. Sometimes it’s easy. But there is always something to take from it.
How To: Do It Better
I’m tempted to just say, “Don’t do it.”
However, I know that my perception of this ride was muddied by my own mistakes. So, if you’re in the area and want to have a crack at it, here are a few tips to make it a more enjoyable ride.
- Get some friends. Everything is better when you can share it with someone else – even if that means complaining the whole way about the sand being so soft, the sun too burn-y, or the shade too non-existent. So rope someone in. This can be a game-changer.
- Timing. Get up and leave early – then come back late. This will take some bite out of the sun, plus it will give you some time to explore further down the beach. *If possible, go the morning after it rains. The ground will be firmer and makes for easy pedalling.
- Pack snacks & water. Plus energy. Minus headaches.
- Don’t get lost. Use my map below to find the start of the trail. When the trail forks, turn right. When you hit the road, turn left. When you reach the T-intersection, turn left. After that, just guess. 😉
